Valencia, (pronounced Valenthia), is a truly stunning city nestled along the southeastern coast of Spain. It has been gaining popularity among travelers seeking to immerse themselves in a vibrant urban culture while enjoying the allure of Spanish beaches. Recently, I embarked on an incredible one-month adventure with Remote Year (#remoteyear), an organization that brings together like-minded individuals to experience the world as locals, all while working remotely.
Let me tell you, this was just the beginning of my five-month program with Remote Year, and it was an absolute delight. The program offered a plethora of activities and excursions that allowed me to deeply immerse myself in Valencia’s captivating culture and rich history. From delightful bike tours and exploring the local market to culture-packed street art tours and engaging paella-making classes, there was never a dull moment.
But I must admit, my absolute favorite was the Flamenco and dinner show, which mesmerized us all with its incredibly complex vocal and dancing talents. It was an experience to cherish.
And if you’re one of those adventurous souls, fear not! Remote Year also offers full-day and multi-day trips, designed to expand your knowledge and understanding of the region, making sure you don’t miss any of the wonders nearby.
While most tourists tend to spend the majority of their time in the historic center, I highly recommend venturing into the charming Ruzafa neighborhood, located just south of the main area. Remote Year provided me with a fantastic apartment in a modern co-living environment, and Ruzafa truly embodied the essence of local living at its best.
With its delightful restaurants, cozy coffee shops, and charming boutiques, it’s a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
By the way, in case you missed it, I’ve written a blog post giving an overview of Remote Year, sharing how it works, and highlighting the incredible benefits of this life-changing program. It’s an experience like no other, and I’m thrilled to have had the opportunity to embark on this journey.
Why Valencia Deserves a Spot on Your Travel Bucket List
Valencia, mia amor, where do I even begin? This city deserves a top spot on your travel bucket list for so many reasons! First, let’s talk about its history and culture. Valencia has been around for about 2,000 years, and you can see ancient influences everywhere you look.
The Romans, Visigoths (Germanics), and Moors have all left their mark on this place, and it’s incredible to see how it has shaped the architecture and layout of the city. Take a stroll through the Old Town, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time with its cobblestone streets and Gothic buildings.
Then there’s the very pleasant and mild weather. Valencia enjoys a Mediterranean climate, which means warm summers and mild winters. Picture yourself soaking up the sun on the beach or exploring the city’s outdoor attractions without a care in the world. Overall, the laid-back vibe here is perfect for remote work. You can take leisurely siestas between your adventures and work calls and truly enjoy the best of both worlds.
With an average annual temperature of around 78°F, it’s like paradise for those of us who love basking in the sunshine. You’ll experience the warmest and most humid months in July & August. I’ve been enjoying temperatures of around 85°F, which means that you’ll find me sitting under the air conditioner by 2:00 PM every day.
As an added bonus, if it gets too hot for you, you can always pop into your local gelateria for a cool afternoon treat.
But wait, there’s more! Valencia is also a foodie’s paradise. Paella, tapas, sangria, oh my! Did you know that Valencia is the birthplace of paella? Just imagine buttery, flavorful rice by the forkful. Here in Valencia, you can enjoy this iconic Spanish dish in all its delicious glory.
Paella comes in many different styles (vegetarian, seafood, black-ink squid, etc.) that your taste buds will be dancing with joy. And let’s not forget about the tapas scene. Valencia is bursting with local hotspots where you can indulge in bite-sized culinary delights.
Trust me, the flavors here are out of this world!
Yet, there’s so much more to savor beyond paella and tapas.
There’s “cereza” – a mouthwatering cherry that’s famous in this region. Spain, in general, is renowned for its excellent wines, and Valencia is no exception. The region boasts a variety of wines, from robust reds to crisp whites. You can take a tour of local vineyards and wineries, learning about the winemaking process and, of course, indulging in tastings.
Next up, vermouth – a popular aperitif that’s adored by locals and visitors alike. The aromatic blend of herbs and spices in vermouth makes it a delightful drink to stimulate your appetite and set the mood for a fantastic meal.
And how can we forget about sangria? This refreshing and fruity wine punch is a must-try while in Valencia. You’ll find it served in many bars and restaurants, especially during the warmer months.
There’s no doubt that Valencia is a city that checks all the boxes. It’s steeped in history, offers a perfect climate for leisure and work, and has a gastronomic scene that will make your taste buds do a happy dance.
Add this gem to your travel bucket list, and you won’t be disappointed.
Valencia Top Attractions
City of Arts and Sciences
During my one-month stay in Valencia, one of the must-see attractions was the City of Arts and Sciences. This architectural masterpiece is an amazing place where arts and science come together. During my stay in Valencia, I biked along the Turia Gardens, an incredible city park created from a rerouted riverbed. This sprawling green oasis features numerous sports facilities, playgrounds, and gorgeous walking trails. On our final day with Remote Year Valencia, we enjoyed a celebratory picnic in the Turia Gardens.

As one of the oldest neighborhoods in Valencia, Barrio del Carmen offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s past. Walking through its narrow streets and alleys, I encountered beautifully preserved architecture, including ancient buildings, churches, and quaint squares that exude a sense of timeless beauty. But it’s not just the historical aspect that makes Barrio del Carmen special; it’s the lively and artistic ambiance that sets it apart.

Travel Tips for Valencia
Getting Around the City
Getting around the city of Valencia is a breeze with various transportation options available. During my month-long stay, I opted for a bike rental, taking advantage of the dedicated bike lanes throughout the city. Scooters and mopeds are also popular choices for getting around. Valencia is quite walkable, especially in the historic center, but for those who prefer not to walk in the hottest hours, the efficient public transportation system includes buses, trams, and metro lines. To enjoy unlimited travel on public transport, you can purchase a Valencia Tourist Card.
When time is of the essence or you need to travel during peak heat, taxis are easily accessible. I found that using local apps like FreeNow and Cabify was the most convenient way to call a taxi, allowing me to prepay for rides.
Practical Information
Most establishments accept credit cards (except for American Express), but carrying some cash for tips and gratuities (called propina here in Valencia) is a good idea, especially for delivery personnel and cabbies. While many locals speak some English, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can enhance your interactions. I personally hired a Spanish instructor for three weekly sessions during the month, paying around €200.
Valencia’s weather can be hot and humid, so packing light, breathable cotton clothing, sunscreen, and a hat is recommended.
Safety and Health
Valencia is generally safe, even for solo female travelers. Daylight lasts long into the evening, and locals often walk and bike late at night. Nonetheless, using common sense and taking precautions in tourist-heavy areas, such as keeping an eye on belongings, is essential.
Tap water is safe to drink but has a slight taste, so I suggest opting for bottled water. Carrying necessary medications and a small first-aid kit is wise for minor issues. In case of emergencies, save the local emergency numbers, photos of your passport, and travel insurance information on your phone.
Take Your Trip To The Next Level
I want you to make the most of your time when traveling to a beautiful city like Valencia. And what better way to do that than by teaming up with a personal travel consultant? The best part about working with a personal travel advisor is how I go above and beyond for our clients.
I don’t just secure great hotel accommodations. As you can see from my notes above, you can be certain that I’ll provide valuable insights into local attractions, events, and experiences, all tailored to your interests. Moreover, thanks to my trusted network of contacts, you’ll enjoy additional perks such as restaurant recommendations and suggestions on some of the hottest nightclubs in town.
So, if you’re really looking to level up your next trip to Valencia (or any other global city), I highly recommend getting in touch.
