Getting to Cappadocia
If you’re planning a trip to Cappadocia, you’ll want to know the best way to get there. The region is located in central Turkey, so the most common way to get there is by flying into either Kayseri Erkilet Airport or Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport.
If you’re coming from Istanbul (like I did), you can catch a direct flight to either airport, with the flight taking approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Once you arrive, you can rent a car, take a taxi, or book a shuttle to your hotel in Cappadocia.
1. Cave Hotel Experience (Juno in Uchisar)
If you want to stay in a unique accommodation during your trip to Cappadocia, you should consider staying in a cave hotel. Juno Cappadocia Adults Only in Uchisar is a great option for a cave hotel experience.
This boutique hotel offers a luxurious stay in a cave room of all places! The hotel has only seven rooms, so you can expect personalized service during your stay.
The rooms are also spacious and beautifully decorated, and some of them even have a private terrace with a stunning view of the valley.
Juno Cappadocia Adults Only has a restaurant that serves delicious Turkish cuisine, and you can enjoy your meal while taking in the breathtaking view of the valley. After a day of exploring, you can relax and unwind at their Turkish bath and sauna.

The location of the hotel is also perfect for exploring the region. Uchisar Castle is just a short walk away, and you can easily reach other attractions.
2. Exploring the Valleys

By the time you’re done exploring, you might be a little tired, but it’s that good kind of tired—the kind that comes from discovering something truly beautiful.
Here are some of the popular valleys:
Rose Valley
Named after the beautiful rose-colored rock formations that can be found throughout the valley, Rose Valley looks like it’s straight out of a dream. The valley is also home to several rock-carved churches and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding treetops and canyon walls.
Pigeon Valley
The valley is named after the thousands of pigeon houses that can be found carved into the rock formations along the canyon walls. The valley also offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the nearby Uchisar Castle.
Love Valley
Love Valley is known for its phallic rock formations, which have made it a popular destination for couples. But even if you’re not looking for romance, Love Valley is still worth a visit. The valley offers stunning views of the surrounding rock columns and is a great place for a leisurely hike.
White Valley
As its name suggests, White Valley is known for its white rock formations. The valley is also home to several rock-carved churches and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, the Meskendir Valley trail begins in White Valley.
Ihlara Valley
Ihlara Valley is possibly one of Turkey’s most stunning natural landscapes. This incredible gorge has a stunning river running right down the middle. It also has a rest stop where you can sit down, and take in the view, as the lovely family that runs it serves up some delicious Turkish tea. It’s like they know the secret to making moments even more perfect.
Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, there is no doubt exploring the valleys of Cappadocia is worth your time. With their unique rock formations and stunning landscapes, the valleys are truly a natural wonder.
3. Underground & Outdoor Museums
The Underground & Outdoor Museums of Cappadocia promise to take you on a captivating journey through the region’s history.
First up, we have the Goreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site that’s a stone’s throw from the town of Goreme. Here you will find rock-cut churches, monasteries, and dwellings etched into the soft volcanic tuff.
It’s like a time capsule from the Byzantine era, with intricate frescoes and architecture. If you’re a history or art buff, this is a must-visit.
Zelve Open Air Museum is another open-air museum that showcases the region’s unique rock-cut architecture. The museum is located in a valley that was once home to a thriving community of cave dwellers.
The museum features a network of tunnels, caves, and dwellings offering an excellent place to learn about the region’s unique architecture and way of life.
Then there’s Derinkuyu Underground City, a hidden wonder that holds the title of the deepest known underground city in the World. This underground city is a marvel with its intricate network of rooms, tunnels, and passages—once bustling living quarters, storage spaces, and even stables.
It was built over 2,000 years ago and could house up to 20,000 people. Its ventilation shafts, wells, and communication corridors stand today as a testament to the advanced engineering that went into creating these underground realms.
Next up is Kaymakli. In its early days, Kaymakli served as a refuge for early Christians fleeing persecution. The underground complex was designed not only to provide shelter from external threats but also to create a self-sufficient community capable of sustaining itself in times of crisis.
As you step into this hidden world, you can’t help but be awed by the complexity of the labyrinthine passages that wind their way through the earth. Make sure to pass by the underground church, complete with a meticulously carved altar.
4. Horseback Riding & ATVs
When it comes to exploring the unique landscape of Cappadocia, there are two experiences that stand out: horseback riding and ATV tours. Both of these activities provide an exhilarating way to see the stunning rock formations, valleys, and fairy chimneys of the region.
Horseback riding is a popular activity in Cappadocia, and for good reason. The region has a long history of horsemanship, and the rocky terrain is perfect for adventurous riders.
There are many stables throughout the area that offer guided tours, ranging from short rides to multi-day excursions. Whether you’re an experienced rider or a beginner, there’s a tour that’s right for you.
For those who prefer something a bit more fast-paced, ATV tours are a great option. These tours allow you to explore the rugged landscape of Cappadocia on a four-wheeled quad bike. You’ll zoom through valleys, climb hills, and see some of the most stunning views in the region.
Most tours last between one and two hours, and no experience is necessary.

5. Avanos: Local Experience
If you want to experience the local culture of Cappadocia, Avanos is the perfect place to start. This charming town is known for its pottery and handicrafts, and a walk along the river will give you a glimpse into the daily life of the locals.
Start your walk at the Avanos Bridge, which spans the Kızılırmak River. From here, you can enjoy stunning views of the river and the surrounding landscape. As you walk along the river, you’ll see locals fishing, picnicking, and enjoying the scenery.
One of the highlights of the walk is the chance to visit a traditional pottery workshop. You can watch the skilled artisans at work and even try your hand at making your own pottery. Don’t forget to pick up some souvenirs to take home with you.
As you continue your walk, you’ll pass by historic buildings and colorful shops selling local handicrafts. Take your time to explore the narrow streets and alleyways, and don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with the friendly locals.
If you’re feeling hungry, stop by one of the local restaurants for a taste of the region’s delicious cuisine. Try the local specialty, testi kebabı, which is cooked in a clay pot and served with rice and vegetables.
Overall, a walk along the river in Avanos is a must-do experience for anyone visiting Cappadocia. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and see a side of the region that many visitors miss.
6. Hot Air Balloon Rides
If you’re looking for an adventure that will provide you with an Instagram-worthy picture and an unforgettable experience, then you can’t miss taking a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia. It’s a bucket list item for many people, and for good reason. The unique landscape of Cappadocia provides the perfect backdrop for a magical balloon ride.
Picture this: you’re in Cappadocia, and as the sun rises, more than a hundred hot air balloons rise like colorful lanterns against the morning sky. It’s a show that feels like it’s just for you, and trust me, setting your alarm for this is absolutely worth it.
It’s a good idea to check with the folks at your hotel the night before, just to be sure the balloons are a go. That’s because rides are occasionally postponed due to poor weather.
You’ll likely be picked up from your hotel early in the morning, around 4 a.m., and head to the launch site. As the sun begins to rise, you’ll take off in your hot air balloon and soar above the fairy chimneys, rock formations, and valleys. Take it all in and watch the world below transform into this breathtaking panorama.
What if you’re not a morning person, then you can opt for the sunset balloon ride instead. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in the late afternoon and head to the launch site. Then you can bask under the sunset high up in the sky.
