Rome, the Eternal City, is a captivating destination that boasts an abundance of art, architecture, culture, cuisine, and history. With such a wealth of experiences awaiting you, it’s natural to feel a bit overwhelmed, particularly if it’s your first time or you haven’t visited in a while.
However, don’t let that discourage you!
As an experienced personal travel advisor, I’ve discovered that successful trips to Rome share certain key elements. That’s why I highly recommend embarking on your Rome adventure with a thoughtfully curated itinerary that combines must-see attractions with hidden gems, ensuring you have the most enriching experience possible.
To assist you in planning your trip, I’ve crafted a 3 Day itinerary packed with exciting ideas and insider tips to help you make the most of your three days in Rome. This carefully designed guide will not only save you time but also facilitate seamless navigation through the city’s iconic sites.
Let’s dive into your unforgettable Roman journey together!
Day 1 | Vatican City | St. Peter’s Basilica | Trastevere
To make the most of your first day in Rome, I suggest starting bright and early, before 8 am, to experience the tranquil streets before the city comes alive.
As you wander the cobblestone streets, you’ll encounter few people, mainly locals walking their dogs or heading to work. It’s a magical time to soak in the city’s ambiance and appreciate its beauty undisturbed.
Spanish Steps
As the sun begins to rise, make your way to the magnificent Piazza di Spagna, famously known as the Spanish Steps. Here, you’ll be captivated by the seamless blend of modern life and ancient history reflected in the stunning architecture.
A quick note: Since 2019, sitting on the Spanish Steps is no longer permitted in order to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Damaging or dirtying the steps can result in a fine of 250+ Euros, so it’s best to admire them from a respectful distance.
Insider Tip #1: As you explore, you’ll notice cozy cafes scattered throughout the city. These local establishments are referred to as “bars” in Rome because the locals enjoy their espressos while standing at the bar. Take this opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and savor a classic Italian breakfast of cappuccino and cornetto (the Italian version of the French croissant).

Keep in mind that in popular tourist areas, there might be an extra charge for sitting at the al fresco tables on the street.
Vatican City
Your next stop is Vatican City, the spiritual and administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as the official residence of the Pope.
I highly recommend starting your visit with the Vatican Museums. This vast complex encompasses over 54 galleries and houses an astonishing collection of more than 70,000 works of art. Prepare to be awestruck by the sheer beauty and historical significance of the masterpieces on display.
After exploring the museums, make your way to St. Peter’s Basilica, a renowned masterpiece of Renaissance architecture and the largest church in the world. Marvel at the grandeur of its interior, adorned with exquisite artwork and ornate details.
To truly appreciate the magnitude of St. Peter’s Basilica, don’t miss the opportunity to climb to the top of its dome. From there, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of St. Peter’s Square and the sprawling city of Rome. St. Peter’s Square, with its capacity to hold 300,000 people, serves as a grand gathering space for various liturgical events presided over by the Pope.
While in the Vatican, be sure to visit the iconic Sistine Chapel, home to Michelangelo’s awe-inspiring ceiling frescoes. Prepare to be moved by the mastery and beauty of these timeless works of art.
Please remember to dress modestly when visiting the Vatican, as a sign of respect for this religious city-state. Ensure that both men and women have their shoulders, knees, and necklines covered when entering churches.
Insider Tip #2: To conveniently reach St. Peter’s Square, hop on Metro Line A and alight at the Ottaviano-S. Pietro station. From there, it’s just a short 5-minute walk. Like many European cities, utilizing public transportation or walking is often the most efficient way to get around.
If you’re eager to delve deeper into the history and architecture of the Vatican, including exploring hidden passageways and lesser-known areas, I’d be thrilled to assist you in planning the perfect Vatican City excursion.
Trastevere
As the day winds down, take a leisurely evening stroll through the vibrant and lively Trastevere neighborhood. This charming district is a paradise for food lovers, with an array of top-notch restaurants serving delectable Roman cuisine.
Trastevere also offers an authentic atmosphere and provides ample opportunities to engage with the locals, making it an ideal place to soak up the local culture.
Insider Tip #3: Treat yourself to an aperitivo, a traditional Italian pre-meal drink, at one of the trendy wine bars in Trastevere. If you can, make sure to visit the renowned La Gatta Buia, known for its incredible Fiori di Zucca (fried zucchini flowers).

Day 2 | Colosseum | Palatine Hill | Roman Forum
To kick off your second day in Rome, I recommend taking a ride on the Metropolitana (subway) and heading to the Colosseo station.
Once you arrive, make your way to the ticket counter where you can purchase a ticket that grants access to the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and the Roman Forum.
For a smoother experience, I suggest getting a tourist pass, which you can conveniently book online in advance. There are various types of Rome City Passes available, but the best option for the most benefits is the 3-day OMNIA Vatican & Rome Card. This pass offers skip-the-line entry to the three sites scheduled for Day 2.
Colosseum
The Colosseum is an absolute must-see on any 3-day Rome itinerary. With nearly 2,000 years of history, this monumental structure provides a fascinating glimpse into the social life of the ancient Roman Empire.
This colossal amphitheater, capable of accommodating 50,000 spectators, was often packed to the brim during the infamous gladiator battles and thrilling animal hunts it hosted.
For a truly immersive experience, consider hiring a tour guide. With a guide, you’ll gain VIP access to the underground chambers and upper tiers of the Colosseum, areas that are typically off-limits to the public. Moreover, a knowledgeable guide will provide you with valuable historical context and enrich your understanding of the site.
Finding the right guide can be a daunting task, but this is where working with a travel specialist proves advantageous. I can personally handle all the arrangements and secure a licensed guide for your tour. Rest assured, you’ll have a passionate and knowledgeable English-speaking local guide to enhance your Colosseum visit.
Roman Forum
Next on the agenda is the Roman Forum, situated right next to the Colosseum. Take a leisurely stroll among the ruins of the Roman Forum, which once served as the epicenter of political, religious, and social life during the Roman Empire.
The Roman Forum was a bustling hub that housed government buildings, law courts, and hosted various events such as elections, public meetings, and criminal trials.
Please note that on the last Sunday of every month, access to the Roman Forum and Colosseum is free. However, I advise avoiding this day as both sites tend to be extremely crowded with visitors and locals taking advantage of the free admission.
Palatine Hill
After exploring the Roman Forum, it’s time to ascend the Palatine Hill and savor the breathtaking panoramic view of Rome, including the Colosseum and other iconic monuments.
The majestic Palatine Hill, one of Rome’s legendary seven hills, was once a lavish neighborhood where aristocrats resided and emperors built their grand palaces.
Insider Tip #4: It’s crucial to carry a bottle of water with you, especially during the scorching summer months when it can get unbearably hot. Keep in mind that shade is limited in these areas. Fortunately, you’ll find “Nasoni,” public water fountains, scattered throughout Rome, so be sure to bring a reusable water bottle to refill.
Additionally, it’s wise to wear comfortable walking shoes as you’ll encounter uneven and dusty surfaces during your explorations.
As the day draws to a close, treat yourself to a delightful dinner at a traditional trattoria and savor authentic local cuisine among the locals. Afterward, take some well-deserved rest and prepare for your final day in Rome!

Day 3 | Pantheon | Jewish Ghetto | Piazza Navona
To make the most of your final day in Rome, start by visiting the iconic Trevi Fountain, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and the largest fountain in Italy.
Trevi Fountain
Fun fact: Each year, approximately 1 million euros worth of coins are collected from the Trevi Fountain and donated to local charities. So, when you toss a coin into the fountain, you’re not only making a wish but also contributing to a good cause.
Legend has it that the way you throw your coins determines your fate. Tossing one coin with your right hand over your left shoulder signifies a return to Rome, throwing a second coin represents a return and falling in love, and a third coin indicates a return, finding love, and getting married. Regardless of whether you believe in the legend, it’s a delightful tradition to participate in.
The Trevi Fountain tends to be bustling with visitors during the day. However, if you arrive early in the morning, around 6:00 AM, you’ll have the opportunity to appreciate its beauty with only a few other early risers around. It’s the perfect time to capture some Insta-worthy photos of one of the world’s most stunning fountains.
Pantheon
Afterward, make your way to the Pantheon, a marvel of ancient Roman architecture and one of the best-preserved structures from that era. Stepping inside the Pantheon will leave you in awe of its grandeur and craftsmanship.
Initially dedicated to pagan gods, the Pantheon was converted into a church in the 7th century and is now a place of worship. As you explore, remember to keep your voice low out of respect for the solemn atmosphere.
Jewish Ghetto
For lunch, venture into the Jewish Ghetto and immerse yourself in its fascinating history. Take a leisurely stroll along the vibrant Via Portico d’Ottavia, the main street, and indulge in the distinctive flavors of Roman Jewish cuisine.
You’ll find a range of restaurants serving delicious dishes such as deep-fried artichokes, pizzas, and gelatos. Don’t miss the chance to visit Pasticceria Boccione bakery for some delightful treats and Nonna Betta, an Italian kosher restaurant.
Insider Tip #5: If you’re a true food enthusiast, consider joining a guided food tour in Rome. These tours offer an opportunity to savor unique dishes that may be hard to find on your own. As an award-winning travel curator, one of my specialties is designing immersive culinary experiences that allow travelers to delve into local cuisines and establish a deeper connection with their destination.
While exploring the Jewish Ghetto, make sure to visit the magnificent Tempio Maggiore, a significant religious and cultural symbol for the Jewish community in Rome.
After your satisfying lunch, take a leisurely walk to Largo di Torre Argentina, a site that not only holds historical significance but also serves as a well-known cat sanctuary. These feline residents are well cared for by a local charity, and remember, feeding them is strictly prohibited.
Piazza Navona
Lastly, no visit to Rome is complete without experiencing the splendor of Piazza Navona. This elegant square was built on the ruins of the ancient Stadium of Domitian, and its oval shape pays homage to its sporting past.
Fountains are the hallmark of Piazza Navona, and the centerpiece is the magnificent 17th-century Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers).
If possible, time your visit to Piazza Navona at sunset to witness the square bathed in breathtaking light. Before you go, grab a gelato from one of the many nearby gelaterias and relish the delicious coolness as you bid farewell to the Eternal City.
Now that you’ve had an incredible three-day adventure in Rome, savor a glass of Italian wine and enjoy a restful night’s sleep before bidding this wondrous city farewell.
