Part 2: 10 Must Try Indulgent Parisian Trips

1. Croque Monsieur/Croque Madame

croque monsieur paris france

The Croque Monsieur is a legendary French sandwich that goes far beyond the ordinary toasted sandwich experience. With a recipe that’s been perfected since the 1900s, it promises a masterpiece of flavor and texture.

The first step to putting it together is delicate, thinly sliced baked or boiled ham meticulously arranged between slices of artisanal country bread. This is followed by a velvety embrace of bechamel sauce lovingly drizzled over the ham. And let us not forget the crowning touch – a generous layer of Emmental or Gruyere cheese topping the whole ensemble.

This work of art is then gently placed in the oven, where a dance of heat and time commences. Here the heat of the oven transforms the bread into a golden canvas of crispy perfection as the cheese melts, enveloping the ham and permeating every pore of the crusty bread.

As the Croque Monsieur emerges, its essence heightened by the alchemy of the oven, it yearns for a final touch – a delicate brushstroke of Dijon mustard. This tangy adornment harmonizes with the layers of flavor and adds a zesty spark that completes the symphony of tastes.

Now imagine yourself sitting in a charming Parisian café with a plate of this culinary masterpiece in front of you. You take a bite, and your senses awaken to a chorus of flavors – savory ham, creamy sauce, melted cheese, and the satisfying crunch of perfectly toasted bread.

But wait, there’s more to this tale of gourmet delights! Imagine taking this heavenly Croque Monsieur and elevating it to even greater heights. How, you ask? By placing a fried egg delicately atop the sandwich, transforming it into the illustrious Croque Madame! The egg yolk, adds a luscious richness to the sandwich.

Now all you have to do is remember to savor every bite of your Croque Monsieur or Croque Madame, perfectly paired with a glass of fine French wine on your next Parisian trip.

2. Crepe

Crêpes are a culinary treasure that holds a special place in the hearts of the French. Across the charming streets of Paris you’ll discover crêperies where the art of crafting these delectable treats is celebrated with passion and creativity.

Often considered the elegant cousins of American pancakes, Crêpes possess a delicate, buttery texture that seduces the senses.

In France, crêpes come in two delightful variations, each with its own distinct personality.
Let us start with sweet crêpes. Made with regular wheat flour and a touch of sugar, these delicate wonders are a treat for any time of day. All it takes is to drizzle them with syrup, garnish them with colorful fruits, sprinkle them with decadent chocolate or perhaps even cover them with a dollop of velvety ice cream.

Let us turn now to savory crêpes, the culinary legacy of Brittany that has made its way to the bustling streets of Paris. Also known as Crêpe bretonne, they are crafted with buckwheat flour, imparting a nutty undertone that adds depth to each bite.

Savory crêpes can be enjoyed with a generous helping of hearty ham, a blanket of rich melted cheese, a golden crown of eggs or an earthy portion of sauteed mushrooms.

Whether you choose the sweet or savory variety, crêpes are more than just a dish – they are a celebration of life’s simple pleasures.

They evoke memories of lazy mornings and romantic evenings, of laughter and conversation shared with loved ones. With every bite, you’ll become part of a timeless tradition and be infected by the artistry and soul of French culinary craftsmanship.

3. Escargot

You may find yourself initially taken aback by the idea of consuming snails, but fear not, for these humble creatures can be transformed into a delectable and nutritious delicacy beloved by the French.

Typically served as an hors d’oeuvre (appetizer/starter), Escargots beckon you to a fascinating world of unique flavors and textures. When prepared with care and creativity, each bite reveals a delicate balance of flavors, a testament to French culinary mastery perfected over generations

Traditionally, Escargots are cooked in their shells, enveloped in a fragrant blend of garlic, parsley and rich, velvety butter. This classic method brings out the snails’ natural essence. Yet, as with all culinary traditions, there are those who dare to deviate from the expected, infusing their own creative flair into the preparation of escargots.

Take, for example, the prestigious bistro Le Café des Musées, where the chefs have taken a bold step toward culinary innovation. In a delightful twist, they stuff the tender snails into button mushroom caps. The escargots, now in the embrace of the mushroom, are baked to perfection, infusing the dish with a captivating depth that surprises and delights the senses.

A trip to Paris would be incomplete without venturing into the realm of escargots. It is an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and indulge in a dish that challenges preconceived notions.

While I cannot guarantee your personal taste preferences, I can confidently say that the French possess a remarkable ability to transform even the most unconventional ingredients into culinary masterpieces.

Allow yourself to be captivated by the magic of escargots, and you may just find yourself pleasantly surprised by the artistry with which humble snails can be transformed into a dish that beguiles the senses and leaves a lasting impression.

Sole Meunière is a classic French dish with a rich history, dating back to the days of Louis XIV. It played a role in sparking Julia Child’s love for French cuisine.

The centerpiece of this dish is the sole, delicately coated in flour and pan-fried in butter to achieve a perfect balance of crispy exterior and tender interior, showcasing French culinary techniques.

The real star is the resulting brown butter sauce that elevates the dish. This rich elixir, created by the interplay of butter and heat, blankets the delicate fish. The sauce brightened with lemon, offers a blend of savory and acidic elements, creating a magical culinary experience.

Sole Meunière pairs well with side dishes like salads, steamed greens, or slices of crusty baguette, enhancing flavors and textures. It’s complemented perfectly with a glass of chilled white wine.

This dish is more than a meal; it’s a celebration of history and the enduring allure of French gastronomy.

The expertly seared meat is a testament to generations of culinary expertise, and its exquisite tenderness captivates your palate.

The dish’s true charm lies in its companion – thin, golden fries with a crispy exterior and fluffy interior. The contrast of textures, the tender and the crisp, creates a harmonious blend.

Steak-Frites is all about simplicity, highlighting the purity of flavors and culinary mastery.

Pairing it with a glass of full-bodied red wine can enhance the experience.

When in Paris, don’t miss a visit to a Parisian brasserie, where you can enjoy this iconic dish amidst the lively ambiance, filled with chatter and clinking glasses. Savor the steak and fries, allowing this classic dish to become a memorable part of your culinary journey.

Kir Royale is a delightful blend of champagne and a splash of crème de cassis, served in a chilled champagne flute. It embodies the essence of Parisian elegance, combining simplicity with sophistication.

The champagne’s effervescence complements the gentle sweetness of the crème de cassis.

Legend attributes the drink’s name to Canon Felix Kir, the esteemed mayor of Burgundy in the 19th century. His creation, Kir Royale, has endured over time, a testament to his discerning tastes and creativity, now symbolizing fine French cocktails.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply wish to indulge, Kir Royale is the perfect choice.

In a chic Parisian bar, raise your champagne flute, savor the delicate aroma, and let the bubbles convey the essence of celebration and joie de vivre as they caress your lips.

9. Pastis

pastis paris france foodies

In the early 1930s, Paul Ricard set out to create Pastis, a spirit inspired by the French love for anise-flavored beverages. He meticulously blended green anise, star anise, and licorice, leaving an indelible mark on French gastronomy.

Ninety years later, Pastis remains a beloved part of French culture, associated with lazy summer afternoons, vibrant terraces, and convivial gatherings.

One of Pastis’s distinguishing features is its captivating, cloudy appearance, which has intrigued generations of enthusiasts. When water is gently added to Pastis, a remarkable transformation occurs. Anethole, a fragrant component in anise, forms countless tiny oil droplets, creating a beautiful interplay of light and shadow. This cloudiness is a hallmark of Pastis, a fusion of science and tradition.

To savor Pastis authentically, a delicate balance is key. Typically diluted at a ratio of 4 to 6 parts water to 1 part Pastis, this mixture allows the aromatic oils to unfurl, creating a symphony of flavors. As water blends with the spirit, a delightful alchemy unfolds, revealing hidden nuances and complexities. Each sip becomes a journey of taste, a dance of anise, licorice, and aromatic botanicals harmonizing on the palate.

Whether enjoyed among friends, as a prelude to a meal, or as a contemplative evening companion, Pastis fosters connection and embodies the warmth and joie de vivre that characterizes the French spirit.

10. Chocolat l’ancienne

Chocolat L’ancienne transcends the usual Nestle cocoa powder-and-water routine. Luscious dark chocolate is melted gracefully in rich whole milk yielding a hot, luxurious potion that wraps you in its warm embrace. It’s as if the gods themselves have crafted this ethereal nectar that makes you crave every sip.

As if this sheer decadence wasn’t enough, a separate bowl of freshly whipped cream awaits, adding a cloud-like dimension to your already celestial drink. The pillowy dollop of cream blends harmoniously with the velvety elixir, elevating the experience to new heights.

To enjoy this incomparable hot chocolate, there is only one destination that reigns supreme: Angelina, the iconic Parisian tea house known for its masterful preparation of this elixir of pleasure. Savor every sip, cherish every moment and let the magic of Chocolat L’ancienne at Angelina engulf you in a blissful reverie.

PLANNING A TRIP TO PARIS?

TRAVEL HACK: NAVIGATING AROUND TRANSIT STRIKES

Transit strikes can wreak havoc on your carefully planned vacation. In Paris, strikes by Paris public transport staff are quite common. Luckily, these strikes are usually planned ahead of time and the public is informed in advance exactly when the transit system will be unavailable.

What should you do when there’s a transit strike?

Firstly, your travel advisor should make sure you’re aware of the scheduled strikes and will suggest alternatives to help you navigate the city.

Secondly, you may consider booking private transfers to help you get around. These can be especially helpful for travel to and from the airport.

Thirdly, purchase a Paris Sightseeing Pass, which covers the use of all public transport networks (includes the hop-on-hop-off-bus) plus admission to over 50 Parisian museums.

Lastly, consider taking a side trip to the French countryside to wait out the disruption.

The most important thing is to be flexible and have lots of patience! Don’t let a transit strike ruin your trip.
